What Does a U.S. Beverage Importer Do?

By Global Sip · September 23, 2026 · 3 min read

If you make a beverage outside the United States and want to sell it here, you’ll hear the word "importer" early and often. But what does a U.S. beverage importer actually do — and how is that different from a distributor or a broker?

The short answer

A U.S. beverage importer is the company that brings your product into the country and takes responsibility for it here. The best importers do far more than that: they’re the reason a drink ends up on American shelves at all.

The legal side

Someone in the U.S. has to answer for every shipment:

  • To U.S. Customs — for the entry, the duties and the product’s country-of-origin marking.
  • To the FDA — under the Foreign Supplier Verification Program, the U.S. importer has to verify that the foreign producer makes the product safely, and keep records to prove it.

These responsibilities are why an overseas producer can’t simply ship to a store and hope for the best.

The practical side

A capable importer also handles the work that turns a shipment into sales:

  • Logistics — freight, customs clearance and U.S. warehousing.
  • Compliance — making sure labels, registrations and FDA filings are right before the goods ship.
  • Pricing — a U.S. price that works for every business between you and the shopper.
  • Sales — presenting the brand to distributors, retailers and restaurants, and supporting it once it’s on the shelf.

Importer vs. distributor vs. broker

  • Importer — brings the product into the U.S. and is responsible for it at the border.
  • Distributor — buys product that’s already in the U.S. and delivers it to stores and restaurants in a region.
  • Broker — represents brands to buyers for a commission, usually without buying or holding the product.

Most distributors and retailers expect a product to already be in the country, with the import side handled. That’s the gap an importer fills.

Why the choice matters

Your importer shapes how American buyers first meet your brand — where it’s sold, how it’s positioned and whether it’s still on the shelf a year later. The right partner treats your drink as a brand to build, not a container to move.

How Global Sip works

Global Sip is an importer and U.S. market partner. We bring international beverages in, handle the compliance, and build the brand with U.S. buyers — keeping the recipe, the packaging and the story the way the producer made them.
